teller
A bank worker who handles customers’ money and transactions.
A teller is a bank employee who works directly with customers, handling their money transactions. When you walk into a bank to deposit a birthday check or withdraw cash, you go to the teller's window. Tellers count money carefully, verify account information, and process deposits and withdrawals. They need to be both friendly and extremely accurate, since even small mistakes with money can cause big problems.
In the British Parliament, tellers still count votes during important decisions.
You might also hear about a fortune teller, someone who claims to predict the future, or a storyteller, someone skilled at telling tales. In these cases, teller connects to its other meaning: someone who tells or relates information to others.
Bank tellers were once one of the most common jobs in banking. Today, ATMs and online banking handle many transactions that tellers used to do, but tellers remain important for complex transactions, answering questions, and providing the human connection that many customers value when handling their money.
