term
A word or phrase with a specific meaning in a subject.
A term is a word or phrase that has a specific meaning, especially in a particular field or context. Scientists use precise terms like “photosynthesis” and “hippocampus.” Mathematicians work with terms like “quotient” and “polynomial.” Every subject has its own set of terms that help people in that field communicate clearly with each other.
When you're learning something new, you're often learning its terms: the special vocabulary that unlocks understanding. A music teacher might introduce terms like crescendo and staccato. A coach might use terms like pivot and zone defense. Getting comfortable with these terms makes you feel like an insider who really knows the subject.
The word also refers to a set period of time with a clear beginning and end. A school term might last from September to December. A president serves a four-year term. A prison sentence is sometimes called a term. You might rent an apartment for a six-month term.
Terms can also mean the conditions or rules of an agreement. When you agree to the terms of a board game, you're accepting its rules. A peace treaty has terms that both sides must follow. When someone says “on good terms,” they mean a friendly relationship: They split up but remained on good terms.
