terminology
The special words used in a certain subject or job.
Terminology is the specific set of words and phrases used in a particular field, activity, or subject. Every specialized area has its own terminology: doctors use medical terminology like “fracture” instead of “broken bone,” basketball players use terminology like “pick and roll” and “fast break,” and musicians use terminology like “crescendo” and “staccato.”
Learning the terminology of a subject is like learning the secret language of people who really know that field. When you start playing chess, you learn terminology like “checkmate,” “castling,” and “en passant.” When you study space, you pick up terminology like “orbit,” “gravity,” and “light-year.” This specialized vocabulary helps experts communicate precisely and quickly with each other.
Sometimes people complain that certain fields use too much complicated terminology, making them hard for outsiders to understand. A lawyer might fill a contract with legal terminology that confuses regular people. But often, terminology exists because ordinary words aren't precise enough. Scientists need the word “photosynthesis” because “how plants eat sunlight” doesn't capture exactly what's happening.
When you're learning something new, whether it's coding, cooking, or carpentry, mastering the terminology helps you think more clearly about what you're doing and talk with others who share your interest.
