terrier
A small, energetic dog once bred to hunt small animals.
A terrier is a type of dog originally bred to hunt small animals like rats, foxes, and badgers. The name comes from the Latin word terra, meaning earth, because these dogs were built to dig into burrows and tunnels to chase their prey underground.
Terriers are known for being fearless, energetic, and determined. They're typically small to medium-sized dogs with wiry or rough coats, though some breeds have smooth fur. Popular terrier breeds include the Jack Russell Terrier, Scottish Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier. Even though most terriers today are family pets rather than working farm dogs, they still have that bold, lively personality. A terrier might be small enough to fit in your lap, but it acts like it's ten feet tall.
That terrier spirit shows up in how these dogs behave: they're alert, curious, and can be stubborn. They love to dig, chase, and explore, which made them excellent at their original job. When someone describes a person as having terrier-like determination, they mean that person is tenacious and won't give up easily, no matter how tough the challenge.
