testimonial
A statement where someone shares a positive experience about something.
A testimonial is a statement from someone describing their positive experience with a product, service, person, or organization. When you see a book cover with quotes from readers saying “This story changed my life!” or “I couldn't put it down!”, those are testimonials. When a company's website shows customers explaining how a product solved their problem, that's a collection of testimonials.
Testimonials work because they come from real people sharing their honest opinions, not from the company praising itself. A restaurant might display testimonials from diners who loved the food. A tutor might share testimonials from students whose grades improved. Even political candidates gather testimonials from supporters explaining why they believe in the candidate.
While testimonials aren't given under oath, they carry a sense of personal witness: “I was there, I experienced this, and here's what I think.” That personal touch makes testimonials powerful. Reading that another student found a math app helpful feels more convincing than just seeing the app's creators say “Our app is great!”
Businesses value positive testimonials because they build trust with potential customers. But testimonials only work when they're genuine. People can usually tell the difference between real enthusiasm and fake praise.
