thankfully
In a way that shows relief or gratitude for good luck.
Thankfully means fortunately or luckily, expressing relief that something good happened or something bad didn't happen. When you say “Thankfully, I remembered my homework,” you're glad you didn't forget it. When someone says “Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident,” they're expressing relief about the outcome.
The word comes from thankful, meaning grateful, and it carries that sense of appreciation. You use it when things could have gone wrong but didn't, or when circumstances worked out better than expected. A student might say, “Thankfully, the teacher extended the deadline,” or a family might say, “Thankfully, the rain stopped just before the picnic.”
Thankfully often appears at the beginning of a sentence, setting a tone of relief: “Thankfully, we arrived on time despite the traffic.” It's similar to saying “I'm grateful that” or “It's a good thing that,” but more concise. The word acknowledges that not everything is within our control, and sometimes we benefit from good fortune or timing that makes our lives easier or prevents trouble.
