theme
The main idea or message in a story or artwork.
A theme is the main idea or underlying message that runs through a story, book, piece of art, or even an event. When your teacher asks “What's the theme of this story?” she wants to know what big idea the author is exploring, like friendship, courage, the importance of honesty, or how jealousy can hurt people.
Finding a theme means looking beyond what happens in the story to ask what it means. In Charlotte's Web, the plot is about a pig and a spider, but the themes include friendship, loyalty, and the cycle of life and death. In The Lion King, Simba's journey from cub to king explores themes of responsibility, facing your past, and finding your place in the world.
The word theme also appears in other contexts. A party might have a theme, like pirates or space exploration, which means everything from decorations to costumes follows that idea. Writers and composers use the word theme for a recurring melody or element that appears throughout their work.
Notice that themes are rarely stated directly. Authors show them through characters' choices and what happens as a result. The best themes feel true to real life, helping readers understand something important about the world or themselves.
