therapist
A professional who helps people with their feelings and problems.
A therapist is a trained professional who helps people work through emotional difficulties, mental health challenges, or problems in their lives. When someone feels overwhelmed by sadness, anxiety, or confusing feelings they can't manage alone, a therapist provides a safe space to talk things through and learn strategies for feeling better.
Therapists use their training in psychology and human behavior to help people understand their thoughts and feelings. They might work with a student struggling with test anxiety, teaching breathing exercises and ways to challenge worried thoughts. They might help someone grieving a loss, or assist families having trouble communicating with each other.
Different types of therapists specialize in different areas. A physical therapist helps people recover from injuries and regain strength and movement. A speech therapist works with people who have difficulty speaking clearly or swallowing. But when people say “therapist” without specifying, they usually mean a mental health therapist or psychotherapist, someone focused on emotional and psychological well-being.
Seeing a therapist isn't a sign of weakness or being broken. It's like getting help from a coach to improve at a sport, except the therapist helps you develop skills for handling life's emotional challenges. Many successful people work with therapists to process stress, improve relationships, or navigate difficult transitions.
