threefold
Three times as much, or having three main parts.
Threefold means three times as much, or having three parts. When something increases threefold, it triples. If your savings account had $100 and grew threefold, you'd now have $300. If a town's population grew threefold over fifty years, it became three times larger.
The word can also describe something with three distinct parts or aspects. A plan might have a threefold purpose: to save money, save time, and improve quality. A coach might give threefold advice: practice hard, study the game, and support your teammates. Each part works together toward a common goal.
You'll often see threefold used in formal writing or speeches to emphasize that something has exactly three elements or has tripled. It's more precise than just saying “three times” or “three parts,” and it gives writing a more serious, measured tone. When someone describes a threefold increase in recycling at school, they're being specific: the amount tripled, not just “went up a lot.”
