thumbnail
A small picture that shows a preview of something bigger.
A thumbnail is a small picture that represents a larger image or video. The name comes from the idea that the picture is roughly the size of your thumb's nail. When you scroll through videos on YouTube or photos on a website, those little preview images you see are thumbnails. They give you a quick glimpse of what you'll find if you click.
Thumbnails serve an important purpose: they help you decide what to watch or view without having to open everything. A good thumbnail catches your eye and tells you something about the content. That's why video creators spend time designing appealing thumbnails, choosing images and text that make people want to click.
The word can also describe quick, rough sketches that artists make before creating a final piece. An animator might draw thumbnail sketches to plan out scenes in a movie, working out the basic composition before adding details.
Thumbnail can also mean the nail on your thumb. If you accidentally hit your thumbnail with a hammer, you'll understand why it has that name!
