tip
Extra money you give someone for good service.
The word tip has several meanings:
- The pointed or rounded end of something. The tip of your pencil is where the graphite meets the paper. The tip of your tongue is the front part that touches your teeth. Mountain climbers celebrate when they finally reach the tip of the peak. When something is on the tip of your tongue, you almost remember it but can't quite recall it.
- To lean or tilt at an angle. A glass might tip over if you bump the table. You might tip your chair back too far and nearly fall. When something tips the balance, it's the factor that finally makes a decision or outcome lean one way instead of staying even.
- A piece of advice or helpful information. Your older sister might give you a tip about which teacher to request next year. A cookbook offers tips for baking the perfect cookies. These are small pieces of knowledge that make something easier or work better.
- Extra money given to someone for good service. At a restaurant, people leave a tip for the server who brought their food. You can also tip someone by giving them extra money to thank them for their work.
