together
In the same place or doing something at the same time.
Together means being with someone else in the same place or time, or doing something at the same time. When you and your friends work together on a science project, you're all contributing at once. When your family eats dinner together, everyone gathers around the same table.
The word carries a sense of connection and unity. Two puzzle pieces fit together. A band plays together, keeping the same rhythm. When people come together to solve a problem, they combine their different skills and ideas into one effort.
Together can also describe someone who seems organized and in control of their life. If your older sister has her homework done, her room clean, and arrives on time, someone might say she “really has it together.” A person who stays calm during a crisis and knows what to do has it together.
The opposite of together is apart: when things or people are separated. But when you're together, there's a feeling of wholeness, whether it's friends gathering after summer vacation, ingredients mixed together in a recipe, or a community working together toward a shared goal.
