topic sentence
The main sentence that tells what a paragraph is about.
A topic sentence is the sentence in a paragraph that tells readers what the paragraph will be about. Think of it as a promise to your reader: if you write “Dogs make excellent pets for active families” as your topic sentence, readers expect the rest of the paragraph to explain why dogs are great for active families, with details about exercise, play, and outdoor adventures.
Most topic sentences appear at the beginning of a paragraph, like a signpost that says “here's where we're going.” If you're writing about why recess matters, your topic sentence might be “Recess helps students concentrate better in class.” Everything that follows should support that idea with examples and evidence.
Strong topic sentences make your writing clearer and easier to follow. Without them, readers can feel lost, wondering why you're telling them all these different facts. With them, readers understand exactly how each detail connects to your main point. When teachers say your paragraph “wanders” or “loses focus,” they often mean you need a clearer topic sentence to keep everything on track.
