tournament
A competition with many games to decide one overall winner.
A tournament is a competition where players or teams face off in a series of matches or games to determine an overall winner. A tournament continues through multiple rounds, with winners advancing and losers being eliminated until only one champion remains.
You've probably seen tournaments in sports like basketball (March Madness), soccer (the World Cup), or tennis (Wimbledon). Schools often hold spelling bee tournaments, chess tournaments, or debate tournaments. Video game tournaments have become hugely popular, with players competing for prizes and recognition.
The word comes from medieval times, when knights competed in contests called tourneys, battling with lances and swords to prove their skill. Today's tournaments are less dangerous but follow the same basic idea: a structured competition that crowns a champion.
Tournaments use different formats. In a single-elimination tournament, one loss and you're out. In a double-elimination tournament, you get a second chance. A round-robin tournament has everyone play everyone else, with the best overall record winning. The format affects strategy: in single-elimination, every match matters intensely because there's no room for error.
When you enter a tournament, you're testing yourself against increasingly tough competition, managing your energy across multiple matches, and seeing how you perform under pressure. Each match builds on the last as you work toward the championship.
