track
A path or marks that show where something has moved.
Track can mean several different things:
- A path or course that something follows. Animals leave tracks in snow or mud, showing where they walked. A train runs on railroad tracks made of metal rails. When you track something, you follow its path: a detective might track a suspect's movements, or you might track a package's journey to your house.
- A racing course, especially the oval path where runners compete. The school track team practices running laps, and track and field includes running races plus events like long jump and shot put.
- A song or piece of music on an album. When you skip to the third track on a playlist, you're choosing the third song.
- A particular course of study or ability level in school. Some schools group students into different tracks for math or reading based on their current skills.
