transfix
To hold someone completely still with amazement or shock.
To transfix means to make someone so fascinated, amazed, or shocked that they can't move or look away. When you're transfixed by something, it captures your complete attention, like watching a meteor shower and standing frozen in wonder, unable to tear your eyes from the sky.
The feeling is powerful and involuntary. A magician's most impressive trick might transfix an entire audience, leaving everyone motionless and silent. A scary moment in a movie can transfix viewers in their seats. You might be transfixed by a street performer's incredible juggling act, or by the hypnotic movement of a campfire's flames.
The word suggests being held in place by what you're experiencing, almost as if you've been frozen or pinned down by the intensity of the moment. Today, we use it mostly to describe that mental state when something is so compelling that you can’t move or think about anything else.
