trendsetter
A person who starts new styles or ideas that others copy.
A trendsetter is someone who starts new fashions, ideas, or ways of doing things that others later copy and follow. When a trendsetter wears a certain style of sneakers or decorates their locker in a creative way, classmates notice and start doing the same thing. The trendsetter didn't copy anyone else: they were the first to try something different.
Trendsetters often have confidence and imagination. They're willing to experiment and stand out, even when their choices seem unusual at first. A student might become a trendsetter by bringing origami cranes to trade instead of stickers, or by organizing study groups in a new way that makes learning more fun. Musicians, inventors, and artists are often trendsetters because they create something fresh that inspires others.
Not every new idea catches on, so being a trendsetter requires some courage: you might try something that nobody else adopts. But when a trendsetter's idea does take hold, it can spread quickly. What started as one person's creative choice becomes the popular thing that everyone wants to try.
The opposite of a trendsetter is a follower, someone who waits to see what's popular before joining in. Both roles are perfectly normal, but trendsetters shape the culture around them rather than just fitting into it.
