tribute
Something given or done to honor and show respect.
A tribute is something given to honor or show respect for a person, idea, or achievement. When musicians gather to perform songs celebrating a legendary artist who has passed away, they're performing a tribute concert. When a community names its new library after a beloved teacher, that's a tribute to her years of dedicated service.
Tributes can take many forms: a memorial statue, a moment of silence, a heartfelt speech, or even a work of art inspired by someone's legacy. The key is that a tribute publicly recognizes what someone or something means to others. After a championship season, students might organize a tribute to their coach with thank-you speeches and a special gift.
Historically, the word also meant a payment that a conquered people had to make to their conquerors. Ancient Rome collected tribute from lands it controlled, and medieval kingdoms often demanded tribute from weaker neighbors.
When you create or offer a tribute, you're saying: “This person or thing matters, and I want everyone to know it.” It's recognition that goes beyond a simple thank-you because it's usually public, formal, and meant to honor someone whose influence deserves to be remembered.
