Tricky describes something that's harder than it first appears, often because it's complicated, sneaky, or full of surprises. A math problem might look simple until you realize it has a tricky step that catches you if you're not paying attention. A puzzle video game level becomes tricky when it requires you to think in an unexpected way.

The word often suggests something clever or deceptive is involved. A tricky question on a test might use confusing wording to make you second-guess the right answer. A tricky trail while hiking might look safe but have hidden roots that could trip you. When your friend plays a tricky move in chess, they've set up something that looks harmless but actually puts you at a disadvantage.

People can be tricky too. A tricky opponent in basketball might fake one direction and dart another way. Being tricky in games and sports shows clever thinking. But calling someone tricky can also mean they're not entirely trustworthy: they might bend rules, leave out important details, or say things that are technically true but misleading.

The trickiest situations require you to slow down, look carefully, and think things through before acting.
