tryout
A test where people show skills to join a team or show.
A tryout is a test or audition where people demonstrate their skills to earn a spot on a team, in a show, or in some other competitive group. When a school holds basketball tryouts, players show their shooting, dribbling, and teamwork so coaches can decide who makes the team. Theater tryouts work the same way: actors read lines and perform scenes, hoping the director will cast them in the play.
The word captures that mixture of opportunity and pressure. You're trying out your abilities in front of people who will judge whether you're ready for the role. A tryout might last an hour or stretch across several days, depending on what's being evaluated. Some tryouts focus on specific skills (like hitting a baseball), while others test how well you work with others or handle unexpected challenges.
Getting cut from a tryout stings, but many successful athletes and performers faced rejection before eventually making it. The experience of preparing for and going through a tryout often teaches you more than the outcome itself, helping you identify what to practice and how to perform under pressure.
