typify
To be a clear, typical example of something.
To typify means to be a perfect or characteristic example of something. When something typifies a category or idea, it shows the most important or recognizable features of that thing.
A golden retriever might typify what people think of as a friendly family dog: loyal, energetic, and good with children. The Parthenon in Greece typifies classical architecture, showing all the features (columns, symmetry, marble construction) that define that style. When a teacher says a student's careful work typifies good scholarship, she means it demonstrates exactly what excellent student work should look like.
The word helps us recognize patterns and understand what makes something a clear representative of its type. A cluttered desk might typify a busy inventor's workspace, while a storm with thunder, lightning, and heavy rain typifies summer weather in many places.
Notice that typify doesn't mean something is the only example or even the best example. It means the thing captures the essential qualities so well that if you wanted to show someone what a category is really about, you'd point to it. When something typifies an idea or group, it serves as a clear, recognizable illustration that helps others understand what that whole category is like.
