ulterior
Hidden, secret, or not the real reason for something.
Ulterior means hidden or kept secret, usually describing a reason or motive that someone doesn't reveal. When someone has an ulterior motive, they're acting friendly or helpful on the surface, but they actually want something else entirely.
Imagine a classmate who suddenly becomes very nice to you right before a big test. They offer to carry your books, share their snacks, and act like your best friend. But what they really want is to copy your answers during the exam. Their real reason for being friendly (getting test answers) is their ulterior motive. The kindness is just a cover for what they actually want.
Ulterior motives are like hidden agendas: the person shows you one reason for their actions while concealing the real one.
Not every kind action has an ulterior motive. Most people do nice things simply because they care. But when someone's behavior seems oddly out of character, or when their generosity comes with strings attached, you might wonder about ulterior motives. A neighbor who volunteers to help your family might genuinely want to be kind, or they might have an ulterior motive, like hoping your parents will return the favor by recommending them for a job.
