unappetizing
Not looking or sounding good to eat; kind of gross.
Unappetizing describes food that looks, smells, or even sounds so unappealing that you don't want to eat it. When cafeteria meatloaf sits under heat lamps for hours, turning gray and crusty, it becomes distinctly unappetizing. When someone describes their lunch as “mystery casserole,” that's probably unappetizing too.
Something unappetizing kills your desire to eat before you even take a bite. Overcooked vegetables that have turned to mush, bread covered in fuzzy mold, or a sandwich that's been squashed flat in a backpack all qualify as unappetizing.
Notice that unappetizing is about appearance and expectation, not necessarily taste. Food might actually taste fine but still look unappetizing, like a perfectly delicious stew that just looks like brown glop. That's why presentation matters: the same ingredients arranged nicely on a plate seem appetizing, but stirred into a lumpy pile, they become unappetizing.
The word can stretch beyond food too. An unappetizing idea is one nobody wants to consider, like the unappetizing prospect of cleaning out a garage on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
