uncalled-for
Not needed and unkind, making a situation worse.
Uncalled-for describes behavior, comments, or actions that are inappropriate, unnecessary, or unwarranted in a situation. When something is uncalled-for, nobody asked for it, nobody needed it, and it makes things worse instead of better.
If a teammate makes a mistake during a game and another player starts insulting them harshly, those insults are uncalled-for. The situation called for encouragement or constructive feedback, not cruel words. When a friend makes an uncalled-for remark about someone's appearance, they've said something hurtful that had no place in the conversation.
The phrase often appears when someone crosses a line. Maybe they criticize too harshly, get angry over something small, or bring up embarrassing information that has nothing to do with the current discussion. An uncalled-for comment at dinner might be a sarcastic jab about someone's grades when everyone was just enjoying their meal.
Uncalled-for suggests the action was gratuitous, meaning it served no good purpose. The person went beyond what the situation required or deserved, usually in a negative direction. When you hear someone say “That was completely uncalled-for,” they're pointing out that someone just made a situation unnecessarily uncomfortable or painful.
