uncivilized
Rude or wild behavior that ignores basic manners and respect.
Uncivilized describes people, groups, or behaviors that lack the manners, organization, and cultural development that come with advanced societies. When anthropologists study ancient peoples who lived before cities and written language existed, they sometimes describe those societies as uncivilized, though many historians now avoid this term because it can sound judgmental.
More commonly, people use uncivilized to criticize rude or crude behavior. If guests at a party grab food without waiting their turn, push others aside, and leave trash everywhere, someone might call their behavior uncivilized. When a classroom erupts into chaos, with students shouting over each other and ignoring basic courtesy, a teacher might describe the scene as uncivilized.
The word assumes that civilization brings improvements like cooperation, respect for rules, and consideration for others. Someone acting in an uncivilized way ignores these social agreements. Picture a cafeteria where students cut in line, take food from others' trays, and throw garbage on the floor: that's uncivilized behavior because it shows no respect for the community or basic standards of conduct.
The opposite is civilized, describing people and societies that have developed systems of laws, culture, and mutual respect that help everyone live together successfully.
