unconnected
Not joined or related to something else.
Unconnected means not joined, linked, or related to something else. When ideas are unconnected, they don't relate to each other in any clear way. When objects are unconnected, they exist separately without touching or linking together.
You might write an essay where your paragraphs feel unconnected, jumping from topic to topic without smooth transitions or logical flow. A teacher might say your thoughts seem unconnected if you can't explain how one point leads to another. In science, researchers sometimes discover that two things they thought were related turn out to be completely unconnected.
The word can also describe things that are physically separate. An unconnected power cord won't deliver electricity because it's not plugged in. Islands are unconnected pieces of land surrounded by water.
Sometimes people use unconnected to describe someone who lacks useful relationships or contacts. A person unconnected to the art world might struggle to get their paintings into galleries, while someone with connections knows curators and gallery owners who can help.
When you find connections between seemingly unconnected ideas, you're thinking creatively and seeing patterns others might miss.
