unfocused
Not paying clear attention or not sharp and clear.
Unfocused describes someone or something that lacks clear direction, concentration, or sharpness. When you're unfocused during homework, your mind keeps wandering to other things: what's for dinner, a game you want to play, a conversation you had at lunch. You're physically at your desk, but mentally you're everywhere except on your math problems.
The word also describes things that aren't sharp or clear. An unfocused photograph looks blurry because the camera lens wasn't adjusted properly. An unfocused flashlight beam spreads out weakly instead of creating a strong, concentrated spot of light.
Sometimes unfocused describes plans or projects without clear goals. An unfocused essay jumps between topics without a clear main idea. An unfocused practice session means a soccer team runs around without working on specific skills.
Being unfocused occasionally happens to everyone, especially when tired or distracted. But staying unfocused too long means important work doesn't get done well. The opposite is focused: when you're focused on reading a great book, hours can pass without you noticing because your attention is completely absorbed. A focused camera lens produces crisp, clear images. A focused plan has clear steps toward a specific goal.
