ungracious
Rude and unthankful, especially when someone is kind to you.
Ungracious means rude, unthankful, or lacking in courtesy, especially when someone has done something kind for you. When you receive a gift and respond with a complaint instead of appreciation, that's ungracious behavior. If your sister helps you with your homework and you grumble about how long it took her, you're being ungracious.
The word often describes how people respond to generosity or hospitality. An ungracious guest might criticize the food at a dinner party instead of thanking the host. An ungracious winner might brag and put down their opponents instead of showing respect. The opposite is gracious: warm, polite, and appreciative.
Being ungracious can damage relationships because it makes others feel that their kindness wasn't valued. When your teacher spends extra time explaining something and you roll your eyes instead of saying thanks, that ungracious response may make them less likely to help next time. Even when you're disappointed, frustrated, or didn't get exactly what you hoped for, acknowledging someone's effort shows maturity and respect.
