uniform
Clothing that all members of a group wear alike.
Uniform describes things that are all the same or consistent throughout. When you stir chocolate syrup into milk until the color is uniform, every part looks identical with no streaks or swirls. When a teacher expects uniform handwriting on an assignment, she wants all the letters formed the same way, with consistent size and spacing.
The word also refers to the matching clothing worn by members of a group. Students at some schools wear uniforms: everyone dresses alike to show they belong to the same school community. Police officers, firefighters, and soldiers wear uniforms so people can instantly recognize their role. Sports teams wear uniforms so players and fans can tell who's on which side. A baseball uniform might include a jersey, pants, cap, and socks, all in the team's colors.
The idea behind both meanings connects: a uniform creates consistency and sameness. Whether it's a uniform temperature throughout an oven that bakes cookies evenly, or uniforms that make a marching band look sharp and coordinated, the word points to things matching or staying constant. The opposite would be varied, mixed, or inconsistent.
