unit
A single, complete part of a larger group or whole.
A unit is a single, complete thing that's part of a larger group or system. In math, when you count “one apple, two apples, three apples,” each apple is a unit. Your teacher might divide your class into units for a group project, with each unit working on a different task.
Scientists and engineers use units to measure things precisely. When you measure distance in meters or weight in pounds, those are units of measurement. A meter is always the same length everywhere in the world, which lets people communicate clearly about measurements.
In school, a unit often means a section of study focused on one topic. You might spend three weeks on a unit about ancient Egypt, then move to a unit on fractions. Military groups are also organized into units: a squad is a small unit, while a battalion is a larger one.
When something is described as a single unit, it means all the parts work together as one whole. A well-rehearsed choir sings as a unit, with every voice blending smoothly. The opposite would be a disorganized group where everyone does their own thing.
