unnumbered
Not marked with numbers, or too many to count.
Unnumbered means not marked with numbers, or too many to count easily.
When you receive an unnumbered ticket to a concert, it means you can sit anywhere in your section because the seats don't have assigned numbers. Libraries often keep unnumbered copies of rare books, special editions that aren't part of a numbered series. A teacher might hand out unnumbered pages of a story, leaving students to figure out the correct order themselves.
The word also describes quantities so vast they feel impossible to count. Ancient epics speak of warriors facing unnumbered enemies, meaning armies so large that counting them would be pointless. When you look up at the night sky, you see unnumbered stars, far more than anyone could realistically count. In this sense, unnumbered captures that feeling of overwhelming abundance.
The opposite is numbered, whether that means marked with actual numbers or limited in quantity. Numbered seats at a theater give everyone an exact spot. When something's days are numbered, it means there's only a limited, countable amount of time left.
