unpleasantly
In a way that feels bad, annoying, or uncomfortable.
Unpleasantly means in a way that causes discomfort, annoyance, or displeasure. When something happens unpleasantly, it feels bad or wrong in some way.
The word describes how something affects you. A room might be unpleasantly hot when the air conditioning breaks on a summer day, making everyone sweaty and irritable. A person who speaks unpleasantly might use a harsh tone or rude words that make others uncomfortable. Food that is unpleasantly sour makes your face scrunch up because it tastes bad.
Notice that what's unpleasant to one person might not bother another. You might find wet socks unpleasantly squishy, while your friend barely notices. The word captures that subjective feeling of “this bothers me” or “this feels wrong.”
The opposite would be pleasantly, like when you're pleasantly surprised by an unexpected compliment or pleasantly tired after a great day of playing outside. Unpleasantly is that negative version: the surprise that disappoints, the tiredness that feels exhausting, or the discovery that ruins your mood.
