unpopular
Not liked or approved of by most people.
Unpopular means not liked or accepted by most people. An unpopular opinion is one that few people agree with. An unpopular decision might be necessary but disliked, like when a teacher assigns extra homework before a holiday break.
Being unpopular is different from being unknown. A movie everyone has heard of can still be unpopular if most people think it's terrible. A class rule might be unpopular even though everyone follows it, because students wish it didn't exist.
Sometimes unpopular choices turn out to be right. A student might make an unpopular suggestion for a group project that classmates reject at first, only to realize later it was the best idea. Historical figures like Abraham Lincoln made deeply unpopular decisions that preserved the nation. Scientists have proposed unpopular theories that eventually proved true.
The word can describe people, ideas, decisions, or things. An unpopular kid might struggle to make friends. An unpopular flavor of ice cream sits in the freezer while chocolate and vanilla disappear. Understanding why something is unpopular matters: is it actually bad, or just misunderstood? Does it go against what people want, or what people are used to? Popularity isn't the same as quality or correctness, and it doesn't measure a person's worth.
