unpredictable
Not able to be reliably guessed or expected.
Unpredictable describes something or someone you can't reliably guess or forecast. An unpredictable thunderstorm arrives without warning, even though the forecast said sunny skies all day. An unpredictable friend might show up excited and energetic one day, then quiet and withdrawn the next, making it hard to know what mood to expect.
The word combines predict (to say what will happen before it happens) with the prefix un-, meaning “not.” When something is unpredictable, patterns don't help you figure out what's coming next. A predictable story follows familiar patterns: the hero faces challenges, learns lessons, and triumphs in the end. An unpredictable story surprises you with unexpected twists.
Some unpredictability adds excitement to life. Unpredictable weather keeps meteorologists on their toes. An unpredictable plot twist makes a book thrilling. But too much unpredictability can cause problems: an unpredictable bus schedule can make you late for school, and unpredictable rules in a game frustrate players who can't figure out how to win.
The opposite is predictable: reliable, consistent, following expected patterns. A predictable routine helps you feel secure. An unpredictable adventure keeps you guessing what happens next.
