unprofessional
Not behaving responsibly or respectfully in a work-like situation.
Unprofessional describes behavior that falls short of the standards expected in work or serious settings. When someone acts unprofessionally, they're not meeting the basic expectations of responsibility, courtesy, and competence that their job or role requires.
A doctor who shows up late to appointments without explanation is being unprofessional. A student who interrupts the teacher constantly or refuses to follow classroom rules is acting unprofessionally. If a store clerk ignores customers to chat with friends, that's unprofessional behavior. The word applies whenever someone fails to take their responsibilities seriously or treats others poorly in a setting that requires better.
Being unprofessional might mean showing up in inappropriate clothes, like wearing pajamas to give a presentation. It might mean gossiping about coworkers or missing deadlines without warning. It could be rudeness, carelessness, or simply not doing what you promised to do.
The opposite is professional: reliable, respectful, and competent. Professional people do quality work, treat others with courtesy, and keep their commitments.
