unspeakable
So extreme that it feels impossible to talk about.
Unspeakable describes something so terrible, shocking, or overwhelming that it's difficult or impossible to talk about. When something is truly unspeakable, words seem inadequate to capture how awful or intense it is.
You might read about unspeakable cruelty at various times in history. A natural disaster might cause unspeakable devastation, destroying entire communities in ways that leave survivors struggling to explain what they experienced.
The word doesn't always mean something bad. Sometimes people experience unspeakable joy or unspeakable beauty, moments so wonderful that ordinary words can't do them justice. But most often, unspeakable describes things on the darker end of human experience.
Notice that unspeakable is stronger than just “bad” or “sad.” It suggests something that crosses a line or violates what seems right or bearable. When someone says an act was unspeakable, they're telling you it was so far beyond normal wrongdoing that even finding the right words to condemn it feels impossible.
