unthinkingly
In a way that is careless and without thinking first.
Unthinkingly means doing something without thinking it through, often out of habit or impulse. When you act unthinkingly, you're on autopilot: your body moves but your mind isn't really engaged.
Picture a student who unthinkingly copies an answer from a friend during a quiz because they panicked and their hand just moved. Or someone who unthinkingly blurts out a comment that hurts a friend's feelings, then immediately wishes they could take it back. They weren't trying to be mean; they just spoke before their brain caught up.
The word often suggests a careless quality. When you brush your teeth or tie your shoes, you might do these things unthinkingly because you've done them thousands of times. That's fine for routine tasks. But unthinkingly following a crowd, repeating gossip, or making important decisions can lead to problems.
The opposite would be acting thoughtfully or deliberately: pausing to consider what you're doing and why. People act unthinkingly sometimes, but recognizing when this happens can help you make better choices next time.
