unwound
Relaxed after being tense or busy.
Unwound is the past tense of unwind, which has two distinct meanings:
- To undo something that has been wound up or twisted. When you unwind a ball of yarn, you pull the thread loose and straighten it out. If a clock spring has unwound, it has released its tension and stopped being coiled tightly. A rope that was wrapped around a pole becomes straight again when it's unwound.
- To relax after a period of stress or activity. After a long day at school with tests and presentations, you might need to unwind by reading, playing outside, or doing something calm. Athletes unwind after intense practices. The word suggests releasing mental or emotional tension, similar to how a wound-up spring releases physical tension. You might say “I'm still wound up from the game” when you feel tense and excited, and “I finally unwound” after you've calmed down and relaxed.
