upkeep
The regular work and cost to keep something in good shape.
Upkeep is the work and cost required to keep something in good condition over time. A house needs upkeep: painting walls when they fade, fixing leaky faucets, replacing worn carpet, mowing the lawn. A car needs upkeep: oil changes, new tires, regular inspections. Even a garden needs upkeep, with weeding, watering, and pruning.
The word captures an important reality: almost nothing stays good on its own. A bicycle left in the rain rusts. A friendship ignored gradually fades. A skill you don’t practice gets rusty. Upkeep is the ongoing effort that prevents deterioration.
When someone talks about the upkeep of a swimming pool, they mean the regular work of cleaning it, balancing the chemicals, and maintaining the equipment. A building superintendent handles the upkeep of an apartment building. Sports teams dedicate significant time to the upkeep of their playing fields.
Your own health requires upkeep: eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep. Your education requires upkeep: reviewing what you've learned, practicing skills, staying curious.
