upstanding
Very honest and responsible, always trying to do what’s right.
To be upstanding means to consistently do what's right, even when no one is watching. An upstanding person keeps their promises, treats others fairly, and follows rules not because they fear punishment but because they believe in doing the right thing.
When a teacher describes a student as upstanding, she means that student can be trusted to make good choices. An upstanding citizen pays their taxes honestly, helps neighbors in need, and speaks up against injustice. The word suggests both avoiding trouble and actively contributing something positive to your community.
You might hear the phrase “upstanding member of the community” to describe someone whose character and actions set a good example. Think of the shopkeeper who returns extra change when the customer doesn't notice, or the teammate who admits their own mistake instead of letting someone else take the blame.
