using
To make use of something to do a task.
Using means to employ something for a purpose or to make use of it to accomplish a task. When you're using a pencil to write, you're making that tool do what it's designed for. When a carpenter is using a saw to cut wood, they're applying the tool to get work done.
The word appears constantly in everyday life because we're always putting things to work: using your brain to solve a problem, using ingredients to bake cookies, using words to explain an idea. You might be using a computer right now to read this.
Using can also describe taking advantage of something available to you. A clever student might succeed by using the resources in the library. An inventor succeeds by using materials in new ways. Sometimes the word carries a negative sense, as when someone is using another person selfishly, treating them like a tool rather than a friend.
It is one of the most practical words in English. Almost everything we do involves using something: our minds, our hands, our time, or the tools and materials around us.
