values
Beliefs about what is most important and right in life.
Values are the beliefs and principles that guide how someone thinks, chooses, and acts. Your values are what you consider truly important in life: things like honesty, kindness, hard work, loyalty, courage, or fairness. When you face a tough choice, your values help you decide what to do.
Everyone develops values through their experiences, families, communities, and reflections on what matters most. Two people might have different values: one might value adventure and taking risks, while another values security and careful planning. Neither is wrong; they just prioritize different things.
You can see someone's values in their actions. A person who values honesty tells the truth even when a lie would be easier. Someone who values friendship makes time for their friends even when they're busy. When people say a company has “strong values,” they mean it operates according to clear principles, like treating workers fairly or protecting the environment.
Sometimes values conflict with each other or with what you want in the moment. You might value both winning and fairness, but you can't have both if winning requires cheating. Those moments reveal what you truly value most. Your values shape who you are and who you're becoming.
