variety
Many different kinds of things in one group.
Variety means having many different types or forms of something. When you eat a variety of foods, you enjoy tacos one evening, stir-fry another, and maybe pasta the next, instead of having pizza every night. A variety pack of markers gives you different colors to choose from instead of just one or two.
The word captures the idea of diversity and range. A music teacher might say that practicing a variety of songs makes you a better musician than playing the same piece over and over. Scientists study a wide variety of plants in the rainforest, from tiny mosses to towering trees. A good friend brings variety to your life when they introduce you to new games, books, or activities you might not have tried on your own.
People often say “variety is the spice of life,” meaning that having different experiences, people, and challenges makes life more interesting than doing the same thing all the time. Think about recess: playing the same game every single day might get boring, but having a variety of activities keeps things fresh and exciting.
The word can also mean a specific type within a category: a variety of apple (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) or a variety of rose in a garden.
