veejay
A person who hosts and introduces music videos on TV.
A veejay (often spelled VJ) is a person who introduces and presents music videos on television, similar to how a radio disc jockey (or DJ) introduces songs on the radio. The term combines “video” and “DJ.”
VJs became famous in the 1980s when MTV launched and changed how people experienced music. Instead of just hearing songs on the radio, viewers could watch music videos while VJs like Martha Quinn and Mark Goodman hosted shows, told stories about the artists, and shared their opinions about the videos. VJs had to be entertaining on camera, know a lot about music, and connect with their audience.
Today, with YouTube and streaming services, the classic VJ role has largely disappeared, but some video hosts and music show presenters still fill similar roles. The word reminds us of a time when watching music videos on TV was revolutionary, and VJs were the guides who made that experience feel personal and exciting, like having a knowledgeable friend introduce you to new bands and songs.
