ventriloquist
A performer who makes a puppet seem like it is talking.
A ventriloquist is a performer who makes it seem like their voice is coming from somewhere else, usually from a puppet or dummy sitting on their lap. The trick works by speaking without moving your lips much, which takes a lot of practice. While the ventriloquist's mouth stays almost still, the puppet's mouth moves, creating the illusion that the puppet is actually talking.
They're incredibly skilled at controlling their lips, tongue, and breathing to make sounds while keeping their face relatively still.
Good ventriloquists don't just throw their voice, they create characters. The puppet might be cheeky or silly while the ventriloquist acts serious and proper, which makes the performance funny. Famous ventriloquists like Jeff Dunham or Shari Lewis (with her puppet Lamb Chop) turned their puppets into characters that audiences remember and love.
Learning ventriloquism requires patience and dedication. Some sounds, like B, P, and M, are especially hard to make without moving your lips, so ventriloquists develop clever substitutions that sound close enough to fool the ear. It's a fascinating blend of voice control, acting, and showmanship.
