veranda
A long, roofed porch along the outside of a house.
A veranda is a roofed porch that runs along the outside of a house, usually with a floor and often with a railing. Picture a long, covered space where you can sit outside but stay protected from sun and rain. Unlike a small front stoop with just enough room for a doormat, a veranda gives you actual living space outdoors.
Verandas became popular in warm climates where people wanted to enjoy fresh air without baking in direct sunlight. In the American South, families would gather on their verandas on hot summer evenings, sitting in rocking chairs and visiting with neighbors who walked by. In Australia and India, verandas wrap around entire houses, creating shaded walkways and outdoor rooms.
The word is sometimes spelled verandah, and you might also hear people call similar structures a porch, though veranda usually suggests something larger and more elegant. When authors describe a grand plantation house or a colonial-era building, they often mention its wide veranda, where characters might sip lemonade or watch thunderstorms roll in across the fields.
