vicinity
The area nearby or close to a particular place.
Vicinity means the area near or around a particular place. When someone says “in the vicinity of the school,” they mean somewhere close to the school, not necessarily right at it but nearby. If police are searching for a lost dog in the vicinity of the park, they're checking the streets and yards in that general neighborhood.
The word helps us describe locations without being too precise. You might tell a friend you live in the vicinity of the library, meaning within a few blocks or a short distance away. A weather report might warn about thunderstorms in the vicinity, alerting everyone in the surrounding area to watch out.
Think of vicinity as creating an invisible circle around a location. Everything inside that circle is in the vicinity. The circle isn't exact; it just means “reasonably close.” When a teacher says “keep your voices down, there's a test happening in the vicinity,” she means somewhere nearby in the building, close enough that noise would be disruptive.
