vigilante
A person who illegally punishes others instead of the police.
A vigilante is someone who takes the law into their own hands, trying to catch criminals or deliver punishment without legal authority. Instead of letting police and courts handle wrongdoing, vigilantes decide to act as judge, jury, and enforcer themselves.
In the Wild West, when towns had no sheriffs or courts yet, groups of citizens sometimes formed vigilante committees to chase down outlaws. While this might sound heroic, it created serious problems: vigilantes sometimes punished innocent people, used excessive violence, or let personal grudges guide their actions rather than evidence and fairness.
In comic books and movies, vigilante superheroes like Batman fight crime outside the law and are usually portrayed as noble heroes. Real vigilantes, however, undermine the justice system that protects everyone's rights. When people bypass courts and due process, they risk punishing the wrong person and creating more chaos than justice.
Modern legal systems exist specifically to prevent vigilante justice. Police investigate, lawyers present evidence, and judges or juries decide guilt or innocence, with rules protecting everyone involved. This system isn't perfect, but it's far more reliable and fair than individuals taking justice into their own hands based on anger, assumptions, or revenge.
