villa
A large, fancy house, often used as a vacation home.
A villa is a large, elegant house, usually in the countryside or near a resort area. The word comes from ancient Rome, where wealthy Romans built spacious country homes called villae to escape the noise and crowds of the city. These original villas had beautiful gardens, cool fountains, and rooms designed for relaxation and entertaining guests.
Today, when you hear about someone staying at a villa, it often means a luxurious vacation home, perhaps overlooking the Mediterranean Sea or nestled in the hills of Tuscany. Modern villas typically have multiple bedrooms, private pools, and plenty of outdoor space. Unlike a regular house in a neighborhood, a villa suggests both elegance and a connection to a pleasant natural setting.
In some countries, “villa” simply means a nice house in a residential area, but in English it usually carries that sense of a special, sometimes grand dwelling meant for comfortable living. When an author writes that a character “retreated to their villa,” you can picture someone relaxing in a beautiful home away from the everyday bustle, much like those ancient Romans did two thousand years ago.
