violinist
A person who plays the violin.
A violinist is someone who plays the violin, a small wooden string instrument held under the chin and played with a bow. The violin produces some of the most expressive sounds in music, capable of everything from soaring melodies to quick, dancing rhythms.
Becoming a skilled violinist takes years of dedicated practice. Young violinists spend countless hours learning proper bow technique, finger placement, and reading music. Many start lessons as early as age four or five, often using smaller violins that fit their hands. Famous violinists like Itzhak Perlman and Midori have inspired millions with their performances.
Violinists play in many settings: orchestras, string quartets, folk bands, and solo concerts. In an orchestra, the first violinist (or concertmaster) sits closest to the conductor and sometimes plays solo passages. Street violinists perform on city corners, while bluegrass and Irish violinists (often called fiddlers) play lively dance music.
Unlike larger string instruments like the cello, which rests on the floor, the violin's compact size lets violinists stand and move while playing, making it perfect for everything from formal concert halls to outdoor festivals.
